scream

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter who is best known for creating the iconic painting “The Scream of Nature”. He hand painted the following poem  onto the frame of an early version of the work:

I was walking along the road with two friends – the sun was setting – suddenly the sky turned blood red – I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence – there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city – my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety – and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature.

I know there is a strong link between music and poetry, so some people might already consider Jim Morrison a poet. Fans of the Doors can’t help but notice the lyrically style and poetic elements Morrison put into his rock ‘n’ roll. But, he also published a volume of poetry titled The Lords and the New Creatures, and had several of his unpublished poetry compiled into a volume posthumously.

Power

I can make the earth stop in

its tracks. I made the

blue cars go away.

I can make myself invisible or small.

I can become gigantic & reach the

farthest things. I can change

the course of nature.

I can place myself anywhere in

space or time.

I can summon the dead.

I can perceive events on other worlds,

in my deepest inner mind,

& in the minds of others.

I can

Viggo Mortensen. Most people know him from his acting roles in The Lord or the Rings Trilogy, The Road or Hidalgo. Far fewer people recognize him for his many poetry collections. Mortensen often incorporates art and photography into his works, creating a layered and multifaceted read. The sample of poetry that follows is taken from his book Recent Forgeries:

HOME

HE’S GOT A DEEP, ABIDING RESPECT

VERGING ON IDOL WORSHIP

FOR WHERE THINGS END UP.

THERE ARE UNOPENED LETTERS

IN HIS REFRIGERATOR, A FAKE

FINGERNAIL IN THE SOAPDISH,

SHOES EVERYPLACE.

THESE THINGS, AND MANY MORE

LEAVINGS, FRAGMENTS, BALANCING

REMINDERS OF A BREEZE

FROM A SLAMMED DOOR–

CONFIGURATIONS OF SANCTIFIED LOOSE ENDS–

HAVE BECOME THE LIVING NET

ABOVE WHICH HE PERFORMS

THE MOVEMENTS THAT MAKE

THE CLOCK WORK.

Halfway Down

Halfway down the stairs
is a stair
where i sit.
there isn’t any
other stair
quite like
it.
i’m not at the bottom,
i’m not at the top;
so this is the stair
where
I always
stop.

Halfway up the stairs
Isn’t up
And it isn’t down.
It isn’t in the nursery,
It isn’t in town.
And all sorts of funny thoughts
Run round my head.
It isn’t really
Anywhere!
It’s somewhere else
Instead!
