Maybe you threw your book down in disbelief, or let out an audible gasp, or even (if the moment was so unexpected) a few tears might have streamed down your face. No matter what your reaction, there are those moments you come across while reading that surprise you to your core. Some moments come out of nowhere and some make you go back to read the book again to see if you missed the surprise’s setup.
So, I want to know what moments really surprised you while you were reading. Be as direct or indirect as possible. If you don’t want to spoil the moment for other readers just share the book that surprised you. Below are some of my own favorite literary surprises:
Mr. Rochester’s marital status in Jane Eyre.
The unnamed narrator/Tyler Durden connection in Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk.
The identity of the murderer in Agatha Christie’s Murder of Roger Ackroyd.
The “real” story in Life of Pi by Yann Martel.
