Literary World Cup – Round 3 Group D

Goodbye Italy and England. I have to say I’m a little shocked that both of these teams are out so early. For England I’m highlighting the book A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby now since I never got the chance to before. Hornby’s novel is going to be a film soon but please follow the steadfast rule and read the book before you watch the movie.

Costa Rica vs. England

WINNER: Not England

Top Dog: The Science of Winning and Losing

The Winner

David Baldacci

Though the game ended in a 0-0 draw, I’m calling Not England the winner. It might be odd choice of wording on my part, but even though Costa Rica is through to the next round and is the point leader of group D, I’m still hesitant to say Costa Rica is the winner because they didn’t manage to get any points through England’s defense this game. So good job England, but you’re still not the winner.

WINNER: Uruguay

The Museum of Useless Efforts

Cristina Peri Rossi

There are little moments in life that go by unnoticed. Peri Rossi takes these little moments and creates haunting and memorable tales, many of them short little pieces that serve as anecdotal slices of life. “The Rebellious Sheep” for instance takes the simple task of counting sheep as a remedy for insomnia and turns it into an unexpected situation with a surprising end.
